Summary
"Since the resurgence of international interest in German art in the 1980s, contemporary art from Germany has largely been associated with white, male, West German artists who confronted the country's Nazi past in monumental gestural paintings. The exhibition catalogue "Made in Germany?" presents a more expansive picture of contemporary German art, spotlighting creators from diverse backgrounds-including women, East Germans, and persons of Turkish, Jewish, Asian, and African descent-whose work interrogates notions of national identity. Short, easily digestible essays on topics such as labor migration, being Black in Germany, and the aftermath of the fall of the Berlin Wall lay the groundwork for understanding the country's intercultural dynamics, while a series of object-focused texts delve into works in a range of media, including photographs, drawings, sculpture, readymades, and film, from roughly the 1980s to today. The book, through a variety of approaches, asks what it means "to be German"-for individuals and artwork alike"-- Provided by publisher.
