This holding contains an audio recording and transcript of a 04 January 2003 interview with Beard Sr. documenting his experiences as a pilot in the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. He speaks about growing up in West Virginia, the attack on Pearl Harbour, enlisting in the Army Air Forces, and pilot and two engineer training in Mississippi, Texas, Kansas, Oklahoma, Massachusetts, and Virginia. Beard Sr. also discusses being deployed to Europe, traveling there by boat, assignment to the 756th Bombardier, the 15th Air Force in Italy, bombing missions in throughout the European Theater, Tuskegee Airmen escort, anti-aircraft (Flak), wanting to stay with his crew, planes having mechanical problems, flying back to the United States on a B-24, volunteering to serve in the Pacific, keeping in touch with crew after the war, and his views on war.
