Summary
Autograph letters and documents, chiefly 1780-1850, of prominent 18th and 19th century lawyers, judges, and public officials. Porter was in charge of the prosecution at the trial of Charles Guiteau, the assassin of James Garfield, and there are two letters from Guiteau in the collection, written while he was awaiting trial. Other individuals represented include Louis Agassiz, Abraham Bishop, Jonathan Dayton, William Ellery, Oliver Ellsworth, Samuel Huntington, Andrew Jackson, James Monroe, Jedidiah Morse, Timothy Pickering, Franklin Pierce, James K. Polk, Roger M. Sherman, John Tyler, and Jeremiah Wadsworth. Includes a group of business and personal letters (1813-1876) of John Strachan of Aberdeen, Scotland
