Summary
Correspondence, diaries, account books, memorandum books, legal and business records, indentures, and other papers of William Shippen Jr., his wife Alice Lee Shippen, their children Anne ("Nancy") Home Shippen Livingston and Thomas Lee Shippen, William Shippen Sr., Edward Shippen, and other family members.
Reflects the Shippen family's experiences during the Revolutionary War, engagement with national politics, and participation in the Philadelphia social circle surrounding George Washington during his presidency. Documents William Shippen Jr.'s medical practice, the family's dealings in Philadelphia real estate, the administration of family estates, and their personal lives.
Of note is the documentation of the lives of women family members in diaries, letters, and such ephemera as embroidery patterns. Focuses, in particular, on Anne Home Shippen Livingston and documents her romance with the French diplomat, Louis-Guillaume Otto, comte de Mosloy; her marriage to and separation from Henry Beekman Livingston and the subsequent loss of custody of her child, Margaret ("Peggy") Livingston; and her observations on women's position in society.
Correspondents include Thomas Jefferson, Francis Scott Key, Arthur Lee, Richard Henry Lee, James Madison (1749-1812), Richard Rush, William Short, and George Washington.
Includes correspondence and other papers of the Nicholson family as well as of the Byrd, Carter, Izard, Lee, and Roberdeau families. Nicholson family papers pertain to Joseph Hopper Nicholson chiefly during his years as a U.S. representative from Maryland and subsequently, as a judge; his wife Rebecca Lloyd Nicholson; his father Joseph Nicholson Jr.; and other members of their family. Correspondents include Nathaniel Macon, John Randolph, and C.A. Rodney.
