Summary
Chiefly letters written by Perrine during his service with the 123rd Indiana Infantry Regiment to his parents, George H. Perrine and Rosetta L. Perrine, in Decatur County, Indiana. Includes letters to the couple from other Union soldiers including Rosetta Perrine's brothers, Chester Y.C. Alden, James C. Alden, and York Alden. Topics include camp life, troop movements, and battle engagements including the Vicksburg Campaign and operations in North Carolina in 1865. The letters refer to dissatisfaction among the soldiers on account of food shortages, sickness, low morale, and corruption among the officers and contain observations on the 1864 elections, Abraham Lincoln's second inauguration, his assassination, and the Confederate surrender at Appomattox, Virginia, in April 1865.
