Documents her fieldwork in Haiti, Montserrat, and in Papua New Guinea among the Iatmul of Tambunam village in the Middle Sepic River region where Gregory Bateson and Margaret Mead had conducted fieldwork in 1938. Includes copies of Bateson-Mead 1938 field records with annotations by Métraux. Also includes material pertaining to her explorations into the ethnology of Caribbean peasant cultures; the complexities of cultural imagery; relevance of cultural patterning for psychotherapy; uses of projective testing; the study of national character including those of China, France, Germany, and the United States; material from her work during World War II with the Office of Strategic Services on German civilian morale; data and notes on the psychosocial and medical stress of Chinese immigrants living in New York in the 1950s; her postwar work with the Research in Contemporary Cultures project at Columbia University in the 1950s; and her longtime association with the American Museum of Natural History. Projects documented include the Image of the Scientist survey conducted by Mead and Métraux. The files include elementary school essays and drawings and responses to interviews and questionnaires by high school and college students and adults in the United States and Canada providing the popular reaction to the launch of the Soviet satellite Sputnik in October 1957. Other projects include the Allopsychic Orientation project (circa 1959) in which the two investigated differing perceptions of space, time, and the unknown; and the Cultural Structure of Imagery project (1965) in which Métraux explored the cultural differences in communication evident in body motion, music, and speech.
