2. Italian farmettes. In America they would be "farmerettes" but in Italy they cling to the "eternal feminine" and their bright colored kerchiefs. Even without the prescribed "costume" they are rapidly becoming experts in poultry raising and other branches of farming, including scientific soil treatment, soil production and ploughing. At one of the Junior Red [Cross] of America Agricultural Colonies that are helping to raise lonely war orphans out of poverty and beggary, these little Perugian girls are up at dawn every day going about their rabbit hutches and poultry yards. Once these duties are finished they turn their attention to cheesmaking, milking, and cooking, for nothing is left out of the day's routine that would make for efficiency of modern farmers June 23, [19]20 [date received]

5. Secretary of War Newton D. Baker inspects American Red Cross activities in England. In the Red Cross hospitals he went through the wards and had a few cheery words for every patient. One thing that the Secretary particularly admired was a new brick hospital which has just been completed in one of the rest camps. The photograph shows the interior of this hospital, which is designed to care for about 300 men. "This is the best thing the Red Cross has done in Eng.", the officer in charge told Mr. Baker with pardonable pride, explaining that every brick and stone in it had been laid by American soldier labor, and that the completed work was an embodiment of the versatility and artistic efficiency of the American enlisted man 1918
