1. Lee, Russell, 1903-1986 Mr. Anthony B. Thomas, one of the leading druggists of San Leandro and also a three-term city coucilman, is of Portuguese descent. His father, a whaler who was born on the Flores Island of the Azores, and his mother came to the United States and settled in Provincetown, Massachusetts eighty-five years ago. In 1882 the entire family came overland to the East Bay area and established their home in San Leandro which was fast becoming a thriving Portuguese community. Mr. Thomas' father wanted him to be a whaler, but after finishing high school, he decided that he would prefer to be a druggist and studied to that purpose. The people of San Leandro, in recognition of his ability as a leader, have elected him three times a member of the five-man council board. Mr. Thomas says, "We are all Americans now and I am proud to be part of a democratic government and always want to do my share on any democratic government and planning board."

6. Palmer, Alfred T. A poster comes to life. "This reminds me of home" said Sergeant Vineyard as he downed another piece of Mrs. Woolslayer's devil's food cake. When refreshments were brought out, the welder and the Army Sergeant forgot all about the war and fighting and production, and embarked on a gossip session the likes of which you'll find in Iowa, Kentucky, Oregon or Vermont. As American as baseball, the Sunday afternoon visit is a friendly and democratic means of relaxation common to soldier, worker, bank president and school child alike. Proudly seated next to the Sergeant is eight-year-old Georgia Ann Woolslayer 1942 Aug
