1. Power plant of Army's new aircraft rescue boats. This closeup interior view aboard one of the U.S. Army's new forty-foot aircraft rescue boats shows the 200 horsepower, direct drive Petrel engine, manufactured by the Sterling Engine Company of Buffalo, New York, which gives the craft a speed of seventeen to eighteen miles per hour and a cruising range of seven to eight hours. Two of these craft, turned out by the Freeport Point Shipyard of Freeport, New York, in ninety days, have been delivered to the Quartermaster Corps at the Army Base in Brooklyn. The boats boast remote control and other latest developments in construction and design. They have complete first aid facilities for eight men, with a medical officer and nurse aboard, in addition to a crew of three [between 1940 and 1946]
