The German bullet landed in his cartridge belt, driving its way straight into one of the bullets in the belt, which thus saved his life. Another bullet hit Chalaire's goggles a glancing blow, smashing the glass and bending the steel wire frame. Chalaire is now Convalescent in the American Hospital at Dartford, London
