7. On the ancient 'imperial road' of Albania. The American Red Cross worker is standing in a trail worn into the sandstone rock on the old Roman road that leads from Durazzo, Albania, to Constantinople. During the long Turkish occupation of this part of the Balkans lines of communication and transportation were given very little attention, only three short highways having been built during several hundred years. It is said that more improvements were made in the roadways during the war and the Austrian and Italian occupation, than ever before, for it was necessary to reconstruct and build a net of military roadways. Although not built with any idea of permanency, they will be the nucleus for Albania's new railway system 30 September 1920 [date received]

10. United States. Office of War Information. Conservation. Truck abuse. Match duals properly! When dual tires are mismatched, the larger tire carries most of the load and the smaller tire is just "along for the ride." This produces fast tread wear on the overworked tire and the excess heat produced usually results in early failure. As a general rule to follow, tires which differ more than one-quarter-inch in diameter should not be mounted on the same set of dual wheels. Consult an experienced truck or tire man for his specific recommendations. The outer wheel should always get the newer tire (due to the crown of the road). Unequal inflation can cause the same condition 1942 June

14. Roumania, Land of Bare Feet. All the clothes that this Roumanian war widow and her four children own, they have on their backs. All are barefoot as shoes are so scarce that few people wear them. These four children were pathetic "starvation" patients in one of the American Red Cross hospitals in Bucharest, and although they are now on the road to recovery they still show the after effects of mal-nutrition. All of them look aged beyond their years and their mentality is entirely retarded and torpid. Roumania is fast straightening out her economic situation but the was has left thousands of destitute people March 1920 [date received]
