11. The scene of the Otranto disaster. The point where the Otranto was torn to pieces on the rocks of Islay's safage where is a bleak and desolate spot. The nearest habitations are a mile and a half away in the tiny hamlet of Kilchoman, which is merely a cluster of three or four stone cottages and a small church and a school house. The cottagers are poor farmer folk, big of heart but lean of purse. They starved themselves to feed the survivors, and the Red Cross supplies arrived in the nick of time to save them all, survivors and villagers as well. The photograph shows the parish church and cemetary, with Machrie Bay, the scene of the disaster in the distance. The picture was taken from a knoll, over a mile away by an improvised tele-photo lens, and from an elevation of about 600 ft
