1. Scene of the Tuscania disaster revisited. At Kinnabus, the scene of the tragedy, there are still two of the Tuscania's lifeboats lying amid a heap of debris and wreckage on the shore. Two of the heroes of the Tuscania rescue work point out the spot where the lifeboats came ashore. The two are cattagers who live nearby, Robert Morrison (pointing) and John Woodrow, one of his "hands" Morrison received the Order of the British Empire for his work in the Tuscania disaster. He saved the lives of three American soldiers. He lives at Upper Killeyan, Islay, Scotland [ca. 1918]

3. United States. Office of War Information. Workers on Rickenbacker rescue boat. How mileage rationing can save lives on the battlefronts was pointed up dramatically by Captain Eddie Rickenbacker, who with six members of his crew were rescued after three weeks adrift on life rafts in the Pacific. "One tire that is not wasted on pleasure driving may save the lives of seven men as ours was saved," Rickenbacker said. One old rubber tire is sufficient to make a three-man raft of the type that saved the party in the Pacific 1942?

5. United States. Office of War Information. Conservation. Truck abuse. A twist of the wrist would have saved fifty dollars! This radiator, worth approximately fifty dollars, should have lasted the life of the truck. It lasted less than half the truck's normal life. Someone neglected to tighten the nut holding the fan in adjustment. A routine inspection would have shown the fan to be loose and consequent adjustment would have saved the radiator 1942 June

9. Palmer, Alfred T. Make your scrap tires save lives. Life rafts like this, standard equipment on American war planes that fly over stretches of open water, have saved the lives of many air crews. Men have been rescued after floating in them for weeks. The ten pounds of rubber in one of these vitally important rafts is about the amount of rubber in a worn automobile tire ready for scrapping [between 1940 and 1946]

10. American Red Cross work in the Otranto disaster, when nearly 450 lives were lost. The Parish church and churchyard at Kilchoman, Islay, from which 199 bodies of American soldiers were buried on Oct. 11. In the background is Machric Bay, the scene of the disaster. The Otranto went ashore on a rocky headland, and was dashed to pieces. If the ship had veered a few points further toward the church tower, it would have beached on the sandy slope shown here, and the lives of most of those aboard, would have been saved [ca. 1918]

16. Lieut. Walter Chalaire of New York, formerly a well-known newspaper reporter, was hit in an air fight at 12,000 feet. The German bullet landed in his cartridge belt, driving its way straight into one of the bullets in the belt, which thus saved his life. Another bullet hit Chalaire's goggles a glancing blow, smashing the glass and bending the steel wire frame. Chalaire is now Convalescent in the American Hospital at Dartford, London 1918
