Thirty more have been given by the farmers of the neighboring island of Guernsey. The gifts are "in appreciation of the American effort in the war." Here are the first ten cows from Jersey's gift, including some of the finest Jersey cows on the famous little island. The photographer had planned to get a picture of the farmers who gave the cows at the same time, and the ten farmers were on the dock, but island folk that, at the last moment, when the camera was already, the farmers were one and all siezed with stage fright and retired from the foreground, leaving the cows in charge of their drovers. 8. First consignment of Jersey cows, the gift of the people of the little island of Jersey, in the English channel to the Red Cross Hospital farm at the new American hospital in Sarisbury, near Southampton, England. The photograph was taken on the docks at Jersey, just before the cows were loaded aboard the little steamer which transported them to the mainload. The people of Jersey raised about $8500 for the purpose of giving these cows to the American soldiers, and in addition to this subscription, several wealthy farmers gave each the pick of his herd outright, to help make up the hospital herd. Ten cows were sent to Sarisbury in this shipment, the remainder to be forwarded as soon as the hospital's stabling accomodations were complete. The neighboring island of Guernsey made a similar gift at the same time. The entire herd of sixty cows at Sarisbury is worth about $20,000 all given by the islanders as a mark of their appreciation of the American effort in the war 22 November 1918 [date received]
