In a book, the TOC lists the front matter, chapters or other major divisions of the work, and the back matter (see this example). In books, the TOC is printed in the front matter on the first recto following the dedication or title page. In periodicals, the TOC appears near the front of each issue or on the back cover, listing the editorial content (articles, columns, reviews, etc.) but not any advertising.
