George Warren Richardson, a Methodist minister from Minnesota leased St. Paul Methodist Episcopal Church of Dallas, Texas, as the site for a school for the colored youth of Dallas; on Nov. 29, 1876, the West Texas Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church adopt the school and rename it Andrews Normal College; Nov. 26, 1877, the West Texas Conference agreed to relocate the school to Austin, Tex.; new school opened in Austin in September 1878 at Wesley Chapel Methodist Episcopal Church and the name of the school was changed again to West Texas Conference School; Dec. 1887, Mr. Samuel Huston, a farmer from Marengo, Iowa, donated property estimated to be worth $10,000, with the understanding that the school would bear his name; Aug. 31, 1910, Samuel Huston College was chartered as a private educational corporation)
