Between 1940-42 he completed his studies in Clermont-Ferrand and was arrested at the end of 1942. He spent two years in various prisons and in the camps of Vernet and Gurs. Having survived typhoid fever in Vernet in 1943, he was sent on sick leave to Lyon, where he was hospitalized until the liberation. He became a rabbi in Lausanne in 1948 and was elected as the chief rabbi of Lausanne in 1970.
