Unión de Puerto Rico

  • [The Partido Liberal Reformista was created in 1870 and was the first political party established in Puerto Rico (Historia de los partidos politicos Puertorriqueños, 1898-1956, 1959, t. 1, p. 11). In 1887, the party reorganized into the Partido Autonomista Puertorriqueño (Constitución orgánica del partido Autonomista Puerto-Riqueño, 1887, p. 1). In 1897, the Partido Autonomista Puertorriqueño allied itself with the Partido Liberal Fusionista of Spain and adopted the same name. The members of the Partido Autonomista Puertorriqueño that opposed an alliance with Spanish party broke off to form the Partido Autonomista Histórico (sometimes called Partido Autonomista Puro or Partido Autonomista Ortodoxo) (La Comision Autonomista de 1896, 1957, p. 150). On February 25, 1898, the Partido Autonomista Histórico and the Partido Liberal Fusionista merged to form the Unión Liberal Autonomista (La correspondencia de Puerto Rico, 26 de febrero de 1898, p. 2). The Unión lasted a month before splitting into the Partido Autonomista Histórico (sometimes called Partido Autonomista Ortodoxo) (La Correspondencia de Puerto Rico, 26 de marzo de 1898, p. 1) and the Partido Liberal Autonomista (El Liberal, 26 de marzo de 1898, p. 3). The Partido Autonomista Histórico was dissolved on October 11, 1898 (El País, 12 de octubre de 1898, p. 2), and some of its former members went on to establish the Partido Republicano in 1899 (Constitución del Partido Republicano Puertorriqueño, 1899, p. 3). Also in 1899, the Partido Liberal Autonomista was replaced by the Partido Federal (Programa del Partido Federal, 1899, p. 6), which became the Unión de Puerto Rico in 1904 (La Democracia, 19 de febrero de 1904, p. 2). In 1922, some of the members of the Unión de Puerto Rico left to form the Partido Nacionalista (El Mundo, 18 de septiembre de 1922, p. 1). In March 1924, the Partido Republicano entered a pact with the Partido Socialista to form the Coalición (sometimes spelled Coalisión) to strengthen their chances in the upcoming elections (El Mundo, 22 de marzo de 1924, p. 1, 7). In response to the creation of the Coalición, some of the more liberal elements of the Partido Republicano formed a new party with the Unión de Puerto Rico, which became known as the Partido Alianza (El Mundo, 22 de abril de 1924, p. 1), and the Partido Republicano, still part of the Coalición, rebranded itself as the Partido Republicano Puro (El Mundo, 6 de mayo de 1924, p. 1). In 1932, some of the more conservative members of Alianza left to rejoin with the Partido Republicano Puro, forming the Partido Unión Republicana (Historia de los partidos politicos Puertorriqueños, 1898-1956, 1959, t. 2, p. 9-11), while the remaining Alianza members reconstituted the party into the Partido Liberal Puertorriqueño (ibid., t. 2, p.22). In 1937, some members left the Partido Liberal Puertorriqueño and formed the Partido Liberal Neto, Auténtico y Completo (ibid., t. 2, p. 125-126). The following year, the Partido Liberal Neto, Auténtico y Completo was renamed the Partido Popular Democrático (ibid., t. 2, p. 133), which is a major and still active political party in Puerto Rico. In 1946, some members of the Partido Popular Democrático left to form a pro-independence party, the Partido Independentista Puertorriqueño (ibid., t. 2, p. 259-260), which is also still an active political party in Puerto Rico, although smaller. In August 1948, the Partido Liberal Puertorriqueño renamed itself the Partido Reformista Puertorriqueño, which disappeared following the 1952 elections (ibid., t. 2, p.270, 327).]
