Her father died when she was nine months old, and her mother when she was six. Went to live with her aunt in Lexington, Virginia. Moved to Baltimore with her family, where she became the first female graduate of Baltimore Colored High and entered Howard University in 1904, from where she graduated in 1908. Taught at Baltimore Colored High School for seven years while pursuing an MA in English from Columbia in 1915 and continued her studies there 1917, 1921 and 1930. Won 17 silver loving cups in tennis championships. Taught at Armstrong High School for four years, then in September 1919, organized Shaw Junior High, the first junior high school for blacks, in Washington D.C., of which she became the first principal and remained until June 1922. Appointed the first dean of women (and associate English professor) at Howard University where she worked to successfully establish her role as including the education of women and the establishment of a women's campus.)
