Fayette County, Ohio; enlisted in the 20th Ohio (three month) Volunteer Infantry on Apr. 18, 1961; mustered in as a Private in Company B on Apr. 27, 1861, and honorably mustered out on August 18, 1861; shortly after that he received a commission as a Captain of Volunteers, and was mustered in as commander of Company C, 81st Ohio Volunteer Infantry Regiment on Aug. 30, 1861; promoted to Lieutenant Colonel on Dec. 1, 1861, his regiment went on to fight in the Battles of Shiloh and Corinth, in operations in northern Alabama, and in the 1864 Atlanta Campaign; promoted to Colonel on Aug. 8, 1864, he saw the war through to it's conclusion, and was honorably mustered out on July 13, 1865 at Louisville, Kty.; brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on Mar. 13, 1865 for meritorious services during the war)
