  • [Émile de Cartier de Marchienne was a Belgian diplomat. He was in charge of the Belgian legation in Rio de Janeiro in 1896, at age 25. He then served as the secretary of the Belgian legation in Tokyo. In 1910 he was appointed resident minister in Peking. From 1917 to 1927, he headed the Belgian legation (which became the Belgian embassy in 1919) in Washington. Appointed Ambassador of Belgium to London in 1927, he remained in office until the end of the Second World War.]
