found: Kentucky encyclopedia, ©1992:page 597 (William Holmes McGuffey, teacher and compiler of the "McGuffey Readers", born on September 23, 1800 near Claysville, Pennsylvania. In 1803 the family moved near Youngstown, Ohio. In 1826 he graduated from Washingon College in Pennsylvania. While attending college, during breaks, he taught elementary school in Paris, Ky. In 1826 he became professor of languages at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. In 1833, at the proposal of Cincinnati book publisher Truman and Smith, McGuffey began to create the "eclectic" reading texts for schoolchildren, specifically designed for what was then "the West", first published in 1826 for first and second graders. Those from third to sixth grade were published in 1857. McGuffey was president of Cincinnati College 1836-1839 and of Ohio University in Athens from 1839 to 1843. He was a professor at the University of Virginia, Charlottesville from 1845 until his death there on May 4, 1873.)
