He received a medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1859 and worked as a surgeon during the Civil War. In 1863 he became surgeon to the 47th Pennsylvania Regiment, and in 1870 he became surgeon-in-chief for the Pennsylvania National Guard. He wrote many books on Pennsylvania history and his native Dauphin County.)
