In the fall of 1876 he took his mother's maiden name, Murphy, as his last name. Worked as an exercise boy in Lexington stables. Won his first race in 1875 at age 14. Won his first Kentucky Derby in 1884, his second in 1890 and his third in 1891. Retired to become a trainer in 1892 with a record 682 wins in 1,412 races during the fifteen seasons he rode. Died February 12, 1896.)
