[The Chemical Bank was founded as a division of the New York Manufacturing Co. (est. 1824). In 1844 the company was reconstituted as a State bank and in 1865 the bank entered into the national banking system under the name Chemical National Bank of New York. In 1920 the Citizens National Bank of New York merged into the Chemical National Bank of New York, which in 1929 resumed its status as a State bank and was incorporated under the name Chemical Bank and Trust Company; later that year it absorbed the United States Mortgage and Trust Company (inc. 1871). In 1954, at the merger with the Corn Exchange Bank Trust Company, the name was changed to Chemical Corn Exchange Bank, and in 1959, upon the merger with the New York Trust Company, to Chemical Bank New York Trust Company. In 1969 it became the principal subsidiary of the newly founded Chemical New York Corporation and resumed its original name: Chemical Bank.]
