College of Physicians and Surgeons in the City of New York

  • [Chartered as the College of Physicians and Surgeons in the City of New York on March 12, 1807, by the Regents of the University of the State of New York, pursuant to an act of the Legislature passed March 24, 1791, authorizing the establishment. The first lectures were delivered in 1807. The charter was amended by the Regents in 1811 to provide for the vesting of the corporate rights of the College in its Trustees, appointed by the Regents; but the Trustees might elect fellows or members to the College. This permitted the introduction into the faculty of professors in the Faculty of Physic of Columbia College and paved the way for the merger of the two schools, which was recommended by the Regents and was finally effected by 1814, the medical department of Columbia College having been discontinued in 1813. Some of the faculty had withdrawn in 1811 and formed the "Medical Institution of the State of New York," which affiliated with Queen's College, but suspended operations in 1816. Dissention resulted in the appointment of an entirely new faculty in 1826, when the original faculty resigned and reestablished the Rutgers Medical College. The College of Physicians and Surgeons continued as a separate institution under the Regents of the University of the State of New York until 1860, when the charter was named by the legislature to delegate the authority of the Regents to the Trustees of the college. In the same year the College was constituted the Medical Department of Columbia College, under the name: College of Physicians and Surgeons in the City of New York Medical Department of Columbia College. This nominal union continued until 1891, when by legislative enactment the College of Physicians and Surgeons transferred all its property to Columbia University for the purpose of maintaining as its medical department the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University.]
