O'Fahey [announcement/email from ISITA (Institute for the Study of Islamic Thought in Africa), Northwestern University], April 18, 2019(ISITA's cofounder Rex Seán O'Fahey, professor emeritus of history at the University of Bergen, Norway, died on April 9, in Oslo; an authority on the history of the Sudan and a scholar of Sufism; B.A. in African and Middle Eastern history, University of London's School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS); PhD 1973, also from SOAS; he taught African history for three years at the University of Khartoum, then briefly at the University of Edinburgh; in 1972 he arrived at the University of Bergen as the first research fellow in non-European history, and remained there for the rest of his career; his collaboration with John O. Hunwick brought him frequently to Northwestern beginning in the late 1980s, culminating in creation of ISITA, in 2001; O'Fahey served as ISITA's Executive Director in the early years; upon retirement in 2013, he donated his collection of photocopies of manuscripts and documents from the Sudan and other parts of Islamic Africa to the Bergen University Library; once cataloged and digitized, the R.
