Khersonsʹka oblastʹ (Ukraine)

found: Encyc. of Ukraine:v. 2, p. 465 (Kherson oblast. In ancient times the oblast's territory was populated by Scythians and Sarmatians. During its medieval period it was nominally ruled by Kievan Rus' and Lithuania. By the 15th cent. this territory had come under Crimean Tatar rule. After the Russo-Turkish War of 1768-1774 it was annexed by Russia and colonized as part of the New Russia gubernia [Novorossiĭskai︠a︡ gubernii︠a︡. No publs. in LC data base] (1774-1783, 1797-1803) and the Katerynoslav vicegerency (1783-1796). In 1803 it was divided between Kherson gubernia (1803-1921) on the Dnieper's right bank and Tavriia gubernia (1802-1918) on the left bank. Under Soviet rule it became part of Mykolaiv gubernia in 1921, Odessa gubernia in 1922, Kherson and Melitopol okruhas in 1925, Odessa oblast in 1932, and Mykolaiv oblast in 1917)
