He received his A.B. degree at the University of Chicago in 1901 and his Ph.D. in 1913, working under Professor Breasted. At the Syrian Protestant College, late the American University of Beruit, he began teaching as an Instructor in English in 1904 and ended in 1924 as Professor of History and Chairman of the Department of History, He was Field Director of the Oriental Institute Epigraphic and Architectural Survey at Luxor, Egypt, from 1924 until his retirement in 1947.
