He was recruited by Coach Paul Bryant to play football at the University of Kentucky, though he selected to attend Notre Dame in 1953 where he was an All-American quarterback in 1955 and 1956 and won the Heisman Trophy as a senior in 1956. He was the first selection of the Green Bay Packers in the 1957 NFL draft. Played on three NFL championship teams (1961, 1962 and 1965) and in two pro bowls (1959 and 1960). Chose to retire in 1967 and elected to the pro-bowl hall of fame in 1986.)
