found: Washington place names, via WWW, Dec. 29, 2010(Algona. The town was named at a meeting of residents called by C.D. Hillman, a real estate promoter, in 1910. The meeting adopted the name Algoma, which Hillman suggested, and which was for a town in Wisconsin. The Indian name means valley of flowers. It was called Valley City, for a time but that name was dropped it when the post office confused it with Valley Grove in Walla Walla County. The misspelling of the town's present name was done either by error or intent by postal officials when a post office was established. Algona was incorporated Aug. 22, 1955; coordinates: 47.27879N, 122.2604W)
