He studied philosophy and theology at the University of Louvain in 1531, where he was ordained priest and received his licentiate in 1550. From 1550-1552 he taught at Dillingen, returned to Louvain because of impending war, and was promoted to doctor in 1556, after which he became professor of theology. In 1561 Riethovius was appointed bishop of the newly established diocese of Ypres. In 1577, a Calvinist power grab took place at Ghent, capturing the bishops of Bruges and Ypres. They were not freed until 1581 by prisoner exchange. (...) Riethovius had gone to Lille in 1583, to serve the Flemish countryside from there, as well as cities such as Veurne and Sint-Winoksbergen.
