Jackson is a professor of political science emeritus at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, and he is currently a visiting professor at the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute (PSPPI). A native of Waldo, Arkansas, Jackson holds the PhD in political science from Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee; an MA from Baylor University, Waco, Texas; and a BA from Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas. He and his wife, Nancy, moved to Carbondale in 1969 when he was appointed to be a lecturer in the Department of Government. Jackson has held numerous leadership positions during his career of almost fifty years at SIU. These include president of the faculty senate, associate dean and acting dean of the Graduate School, associate dean and dean of the College of Liberal Arts, vice chancellor for academic affairs and provost, and interim chancellor.)
