Attended Jefferson College in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania and was admitted to the bar in 1854. Served in the Civil War. Elected to the Kentucky Senate in 1863 as a Republican. Became president of the California and Texas Railway Construction Company in 1872 then secretary of the Treasury in 1874. Moved to New York City where he co-founded the American Bar Association. Died in New York on June 22, 1896.)
