East Barnet church; traveled to America in 1729 and journeyed to the Cherokee Indian country, where he was declared the Cherokee "lawgiver, commander, leader, and chief;" returned to England with seven Cherokee, but his role in working with them was given to Robert Johnson, governor of South Carolina, instead; he subsequently dabbled in alchemy in an attempt to deal with his rising debts, which landed him in debtor's prison in 1737, where he stayed until being released in 1765, when he became a pensioner at the Charterhouse; member of the Royal Society, 1720-1757)
