found: Union Army, c1908(New York; Fifty-sixth Infantry; 56th regiment org. at Newburgh and was composed of 11 companies, 2 light batteries, and 2 cavalry troops, the batteries later became 7th and 8th independent batteries and the cavalry part of the 1st mounted rifles; men mainly from Orange, Sullivan and Ulster counties and were mustered in at Newburgh, Oct. 28, 1861, for 3 yrs.; original members not reenlisted were mustered out at the expiration of the term of enlistment and the regt. remained in the Dept. of the South; mustered out Oct. 17, 1865)
