In 1590, he was called to Rome, where he became secretary to the superior general, Claudio Acquaviva, until 1608. In Rome, (...) he devoted time to studying the ancient texts of the Church Fathers, which he discovered in the Vatican Apostolic Library. Back in France, he was confessor to Louis XIII from 1639 to 1643.
