Zabin; Dr. Laurie Schwab Zabin, a family planning pioneer who opened an early clinic in East Baltimore and later brought her work to a global audience, died May 11 at the Blakehurst Retirement Community [Towson, Md.]. The former Pikesville resident was 94. She had been a professor in the Department of Population, Family and Reproductive Health at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and was internationally known in the field of adolescent sexual health. Born in New York City; Dr. Zabin earned a doctorate from the Bloomberg School at age 53 in 1979. In 1999, she was the founding director of the Bill and Melinda Gates Institute for Population and Reproductive Health, also at Hopkins. She was the institute's director until 2002)
