Earned a BS in education from Farmington State Normal School (now the University of Maine at Farmington) and a degree from the New England Conservatory of Music in 1907. Moved to Esmond, North Dakota after her marriage. Entered politics with thirteen years service on the Esmond school board. Active in the Nonpartisan League faction of the Republican Party. In 1922 she successfully ran for North Dakota House of Representatives, where she served six consecutive terms. Named speaker for the 1933 session, becoming the first woman speaker of any legislature in the United States. Resigned from the House in 1933. Returning to Phillips, Maine after other positions in North Dakota state service, she died there on July 1, 1966.)
