Educated at his uncle Louis Marshall's academy near Versailles, Ky and in 1823 entered the Princeton Theological Seminary in New Jersey. Was ordained as a Presbyterian minister in 1828 and returned to Kentucky. After preaching for several years, became disillusioned with religion and moved to a large farm south of Maysville where he wrote fiction and nonfiction. Studied law independently and in 1835, moved to Washington, Ky. where he practiced law for several years. Was elected to the Kentucky House serving two terms, beginning on December 4, 1837. In 1848 moved to Maysville and returned to the ministry. Preached in Louisville, Cincinnati, and Indianapolis. Drowned while swimming in Niagara, NY. on August 6, 1859.)
