Christmas Day 1972, Broadwath House, Heads Nook, near Wetheral; volunteer ambulance driver and member of the First Aid Nursing Yeomanry (FANY); Pat Waddell, as she was known, joined the FANY in 1912; after the war she became FANY adjutant but retired from active service to marry Peter Washington in 1922; at the outbreak of the Second World War, she was asked by the FANY to take a mobile canteen to France to serve the Free Polish Army; after the fall of France she escaped through St. Malo and was next sent to the Polish army headquarters in Edinburgh, where FANYs provided administrative support; she remained a staunch country member of the FANY until her death; her memoirs, Fanny goes to war (1919), were published under the name Pat Beauchamp)
