Ropes and George R. and E. Augustus Emmerton accepted loan from estate of Salem shipping merchant, John Bertram to continue Bertram's business and retain ownership of its vessels; ; worked closely with partners, NY based firm Arnold, Hines & Co. (later Arnold, Cheney & Co.); sold Zanzibar agency in 1892 and Tamatave agency in 1895 to Arnold, Cheney, ceasing to import cargo although continued to settle its assets until 1902; sometimes appears as Ropes Emmerton & Co.)
