Evans began his career as a bassist with such artists as Eddie Harris, Sun Ra, and Lionel Hampton. In 1962, he was hired to produce an album by pianist Ahmad Jamal, which led to a position as an in-house arranger for Chess Records and, later, an executive producer. During his career, Evans also worked with Billie Holiday, Natalie Cole, Ramsey Lewis, and Peabo Bryson.
