Rey de León; third son of the King of León; in spring 944 he received the delegated government over the county of Castile; he was called "Regente in Castella" by some diplomats; in 954-955 he led a rebellion to oust Ordoño III from the throne; the rebellion failed but the unexpected death of his brother gave him the throne in 956; his marked obesity prevented him commanding his army or even getting on a horse; having lost the respect of the nobility, they supported the Infante Ordoño Alfonso, son of Alfonso IV the Monk, who was crowned in Compostella on March 2, 958; Sancho was expelled from the capital and fled to Navarre; with the support of the Caliph of Codoba and the Navarrese he returned to the capital in April 959; according to the chronicler Sampiro he was poisoned in mid-November 966 by Gonzalo Muñoz, Count of Porto; he died between 16 and 18 November near Chaves)
