He took the stage name Gareth for his work on stage and screen. About 1940 he made a career change and in the fall of 1942 was sent by the Protestant Episcopal Church in Nevada to McDermitt to serve as a 'lay reader and missionary' to the Paiute Indians at the Fort McDermitt Indian Reservation where he used the name Brother David. He was transferred to the Paiute Indian Reservation at Nixon, Nevada in August 1949. He retired from mission work in 1956 and was then affliated with the Park Wedding Chapel in Reno, Nevada through 1957. He retired to the Motion Picture Country House and Hospital in Woodland Hills, California where he died October 1, 1965. He was buried at the Mountain View Cemetery in Reno.)
