Its date of founding is unknown but it was first mentioned in the Ipatiïvsʹkyĭ litopys of 1257. The town orginally belonged to the Halyt︠s︡ʹko-Volynsʹke kni︠a︡zivstvo and was named Zvi︠a︡helʹ. In the 2nd half of the 14th cent. the town was annexed by Lithuania but after the Union of Lublin in 1569 it was granted to Poland. Zvi︠a︡helʹWas liberated in 1648 by B. Khmelʹnyt︠s︡ʹkyĭ and his Cossack forces and became the center of the Zvi︠a︡helʹsʹkyĭ polk, later to be reorganized into the Kyïvsʹkyĭ polk. By terms of the Andrusiv Treaty of 1667 Zvi︠a︡helʹWas granted to Poland. In 1793 the town came under Russian control and was renamed Novohrad-Volynsʹkyĭ becoming a part of the Volynsʹka hubernii︠a︡. Soviet government was established there in Nov. 1917 but in Feb. 1918 the town was seized by Austro-Hungarian forces. In Dec. 1918 the town was ruled by Symon Petliura's Directory. In Apr. 1920 Poland captured Novohrad-Volynsʹkyĭ but in June 1920 Soviet forces recaptured the town. From 1923 Novohrad-Volynsʹkyĭ was part of the Z︠H︡ytomyrsʹkyĭ okruh, and from 1932 to 1937 it belonged to the Kyïvsʹka oblastʹ. Since 1937 it has belonged to the Z︠H︡ytomyrsʹka oblastʹ)
