found: South African History Online, viewed June 11, 2015(South African Student Organisation (SASO); formed in 1968 after some members of Univ. of Natal's Black Campus SRC (Student Representative Council) decided to break away from the National Union of South African Students (NUSAS), a liberal organization dominated by white students; it emerged from a black caucus formed at a 1968 meeting at Marianhill, Natal of UCM (University Christian Movement), formed the year before; its first conference was held in July 1969, where Steve Biko was elected its first president; in 1973 several leaders were banned, and in Oct. 1977 the organization was banned along with other BC (Black Consciousness) organizations; its ideologies were adopted by successive organizations such as AZAPO)
