It was established as a fortress at the end of the 10th cent., and first mentioned in historical chronicles of 1159 as Chichersk. From the 14th cent. it was part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania but by the 16th cent it had been incorporated into Poland. After the first partition of Poland in 1772 Chachėrsk was annexed by Russia. From 1919 to 1926 it was included into the RSFSR, but in 1926 it was transferred to the BSSR)
