  • Editorial Notes

    • [The term "Infantry" did not appear in official designations of foot soldier units of the Continental Army during the American Revolution, with very few exceptions such as in the case of light infantry units.]
    • [During some periods of the Revolutionary War in the Continental Army a battalion was a tactical formation and a regiment was an administrative formation. During some periods a Continental Army infantry regiment consisted of only one battalion. During other periods of the war, an infantry regiment, although authorized to consist of two battalions, had enough troops present at any one time to form only one battalion. In all these circumstances, the battalion and regiment were functionally identical and the unit often referred to in contemporary documents as a "battalion". Despite this, however, the formal name of the unit in such cases remained that of the regiment.]
