Company A was known as the Quitman Rifles [no publs. in LC database for Co. A.]. The company had eight non-commissioned officers and ninety-four men. It was assigned to Gen. John S. Bowen's brigade and moved to Kentucky. The company fought at Shiloh under Gen. John C. Breckinridge, moved to Vicksburg, then moved south to Louisiana, just north of New Orleans. In July 1863, the Quitman Rifles surrendered to Gen. Ulysses Grant at Port Hudson. The officers were imprisoned at Johnson's Island, Ohio, on Lake Erie. Colonel A.R. Witt reorganized the unit into Witt's Cavalry after a prisoner exchange [no publs. in LC database])
